Some cars run for miles on petrol in a diesel tank, some stall on the forecourt. How far it goes before stopping tells you almost nothing useful. Every one of those miles is the high-pressure pump running without the lubrication it depends on, and the damage accrues from the first turn.

What stopping early buys you

A vehicle switched off at the first sign of trouble usually needs a drain, a flush and a filter. A vehicle driven until it stops may need the pump and injectors. The difference is the distance — which is why the useful advice is how soon you can stop, not how far you can go.

Diesel lubricates as it passes; petrol dissolves that film and acts as a solvent. Run a diesel high-pressure pump on petrol and it wears fast, shedding fine metal into the injectors behind it. None of that happens while the fuel sits in the tank. All of it starts the moment the engine turns over.

Westbound drivers face the Stainmore crossing on the A66 with effectively no fuel and serious exposure in winter. A vehicle that stops up there is a genuinely difficult recovery.
